HMS volleyball teams win at Lyons
The Hillsboro Middle School volleyball teams came home with victories last Thursday after defeating Lyons at Lyons.
In the seventh grade game, Hillsboro defeated Lyons, 25-17, 25-15.
"The girls started out slow, but then got things going," head coach Stephanie Sinclair said. "We really played the net well for being young."
Scoring for the Trojans were Candace Weinbrenner with 11 points, followed by Samantha Soyez with eight points, Dakota Kaufman with seven, Tara Heinrichs with three, Tasha Hollingshead and Jandee Miles with two each, and Bri Loewen, Dianne Sanders, and Sarah Unruh with one point each.
The eighth graders won their match against Lyons in three games. Hillsboro lost the first one 25-11, but came back to win the next two 26-24, 25-19.
"After a slow start with serving, the eight graders pulled off a nice win," Sinclair said.
Sarah Heidel and Jet Skiles combined to have 15 hits and Cassie Kroeker and Abi Humber combined for 30 good sets.
Scoring for the team were Clara Ens with seven points, Candace Ediger, Cassie Kroeker, and Kelsey Bartel with six points each, Skiles with four, and Shelby Koons with three.
The seventh and eighth grade B-team defeated Lyons in three games. Hillsboro lost the first game 25-20, but won the next two 25-18, 25-21.
Scoring for the team were Ediger with 15 points, Bartel with 12, Ens and Taryn Mayfield with eight each, Andrea Bartel and Miles with three each, Koons and Tiffany Rooker with one each.
In the seventh grade B-team game, Hillsboro won the first game 25-18, lost the second 25-20, and won the third 25-15.
Scorers for the Trojans were Heather Goldsby with 12 points followed by Mieka Serene with nine, Tara Simhiser with eight, Carly Weisbeck with six, Trish Pankratz with five, Brandi Boucher, Amanda Roble, and Brittany McInnis with three each, Katrina Muzyka with two, and Dianne Sanders with one.
The teams host Marion today at 4:30 p.m.
