Holly Days to light up Hillsboro

Staff writer

Holly Days in Hillsboro is a chance to jump into the Christmas spirit. The weekend event will be Nov. 27 and 28 and local shops and restaurants will offer seasonal specials and festive entertainment.

"Songs and Colors of Christmas" is the theme for the holiday parade. Children and hand bell choirs will perform, and there will be a special lighting ceremony for the new downtown Christmas wreaths, purchased by Hillsboro Arts and Crafts Association.

There will be a food court at the corner of Grand and Main in the building that used to house Total Home Repair. According to Sharon Mueller, one of the organizers, there are still openings for concessions if a group is looking for a fund raiser.

Prizes for floats in the parade will include $25 for third place, $35 for second place, and $50 for first place. A $100 grand prize will be awarded for the best family float and also the best of all other floats. Applications for floats are available at the chamber of commerce office.

Following the parade, Santa will be at his workshop at the corner of Grand and Main until 1 p.m.

During the lighting ceremony at 6 p.m., a drawing will be held for a "Be Our Guest" getaway. The prize includes an overnight stay at Country Haven Inn, a meal for two at Klose & Kozy, a buffet meal at Olde Towne, merchandise coupons, and a $10 gas gift certificate at Ampride. Shoppers may sign up to win at area merchants before the event and must be present to win.

Organizers of the event hope to bring a lot of people downtown.

"We'd like it to be a county event," said Mueller.
