Holub attends council meeting

Dan Holub, unopposed candidate for county commissioner, appeared Oct. 4 at the Tampa city council meeting to listen to any questions and concerns members might have about actions and decisions before the county commission.

"What are they going to do about the two roads into Tampa? Anything?" asked Tom Leihy.

"They've got to do something about roads," Holub replied. "They're looking at it hard right now."

A free-ranging discussion followed concerning such issues as roads, economic development, zoning, and trash disposal. "We need to do things a lot smarter," said Holub.

There was a continued discussion of condemning the derelict buildings on Main Street, including the former post office. Although the meeting had a quorum, Tim Svoboda and Wilbert Backhus were absent. "I think the whole council needs to be here," said Mayor Jim Clemmer, "so I think we should table it until next month."

"But we need to find out what we have to do," Tom Leihy commented.

Holub volunteered to consult the county attorney on behalf of the council, and the matter was thereby tabled. "If we find out something concrete, we can call a special meeting," said the mayor.

Holub left the meeting with a promise, "Any time you have questions about my actions, let me know, and I'll come out and answer them. I'm available with a phone call."

Clemmer gave the council information about the agri-tourism conference scheduled for Oct. 22-23 at the senior center. There will be a chuck wagon supper Friday evening in the park, and a continental breakfast will be served Saturday morning. Remelle Farrar of Canadian, Texas, will lead the sessions. Anyone wishing to attend the conference needs to register with Marion Chamber of Commerce. The admission fee is $10, which includes the supper.

"We need to get the tables in the park repaired," said the mayor. "Apparently children have jumped on the metal ones and bent the ends down." The council made plans to find someone to do the work.

Among the bills approved for payment were $18,118.34 for a payment on bonds and $489.02 for seven tables for the senior center.
