The spirit of homecoming week, with its wacky dress-ups and contagious pre-game fever, has been running rampant through the hallways this week at Hillsboro High School.

Spirit week dress-up activities began with Western Day on Monday, Jersey Day on Tuesday, and Gender Day today. Thursday is Crazy Sock and Tie Day, and Friday is, of course, Maroon and Gold Day.

On Friday afternoon, a tradition as uniquely American as the game of football itself will unfold.

Students will leave the high school for a 2:30 parade on downtown Main Street, followed by a pep rally in the square at Main Street and Grand.

The band will play and the cheerleaders will cheer, and younger school children will be there; let out of class, to watch the spectacle.

At 5 p.m. at the stadium, the public is invited to a pre-game tailgate meal fund-raiser, followed at 6:30 by the coronation of the Homecoming Queen and King. The game against Sterling begins at 7, and will be followed by the homecoming dance.

The senior-selected candidates for homecoming king and queen were announced at an all-school assembly this past Friday.

Candidates for Homecoming Queen are: Ashley Stout, daughter of Chad and Barb Nowak and Douglas and Ruth Stout; Amanda Bartel, daughter of Marlin and Cheryl Bartel; Jenny Whisenhunt, daughter of Randy and Janet Whisenhunt; Kelsie Penner, daughter of Doug and Jeanne Penner; Megan Peachey, daughter of Lowell and Rita Peachey; and Lauryn Mayfield, daughter of Dale and Lisa Mayfield.

Candidates for Homecoming King are: Lucas Hamm, son of Jim and Myrna Hamm; Troy Frick, son of Curtis and Clara Frick; Adam Dirks, son of Dwight and Carol Dirks; Tyler Kaufman, son of Kenton and Nancy Kaufman; Michael Suderman, son of David and Connie Suderman; and Daniel Berg, son of Steve and Sandra Berg.
