In other city council news . . .

— The council authorized payments in the form of vouchers totaling $68,686.36.

— The council entered executive session to discuss attorney client privilege. No action was taken as a result.

— The council heard reports and unofficial budget projections for 2007 from representatives of Hillsboro Community Medical Center, Hillsboro Convention and Visitors Bureau, Hillsboro Development Corporation, and the Tree Board.

— The council heard a request to pay for one-half of the $1,408 needed to replace 44 metal brackets used to hang Christmas wreaths on light poles on Main Street.

The wreaths weigh 30 pounds apiece, and, although the brackets are designed to hold 50 pounds, after two seasons, already are showing signs of fatigue, Garrett said.

Garrett indicated that the Hillsboro Arts and Crafts Association, which purchased the wreaths, would pay the other half of the cost needed for the brackets.

Dalke said if these brackets needed to be replaced after only two years, stronger ones should be found. The matter was tabled. It was suggested that Garrett seek advice from the company that made the light poles.

— In order to make a fractional correction in resolution No. 2006-09 on the repayment of water treatment bonds, the council passed resolution No. 2006-11, to repeal it. It then passed resolution No. 2006-12, to replace resolution No. 2006-09. The vote was unanimous on all three resolutions.

— The council approved an ordinance releasing Galaxy Cablevision from its franchise agreement with the city, effective July 1. The council transferred the agreement to Eagle Communications, Inc., which has acquired Galaxy.

— The council voted to reimburse $400 to four residents for attending an EMT training program, but only if they pass the certification test. They also must agree to volunteer their EMT services for a year, or repay the money.

— After reading the official job description for the vacant street foreman position, Dalke asked for its approval to be postponed until July 5, so the wording can be changed to indicate that the supervisor also would be required to do physical labor.

— The council heard an update on water main projects from Bob Previtera of Reiss and Goodness Engineers, who indicated that work was progressing on schedule.

— Garrett also reported that 4,342 people had been admitted to the Hillsboro Family Aquatic Center in its first 24 days of operation, from May 29 through June 20.

According to aquatics center manager Jodi Stutzman, attendance last year during first 24 days at the city's old pool was 3,680.

— Mayor Dalke announced that Hillsboro had been chosen to host the Senior Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament, July 12-16, and asked council members to volunteer to help with the event.

— There was some discussion regarding the safety of children riding their bicycles to the aquatics center, and the possibility of constructing a bike path leading to the pool. Discussion was brief. No action was taken.

— Garrett reaffirmed that all city departments would be open on Monday, July 3.

Because of Independence Day, the next city council meeting date has been moved to Wednesday, July 5.
