James Wilbur Haupt

James W. Haupt, 97, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at Wichita after a short illness.

He is survived by his daughters, Elsa Haupt, Long Beach, N.Y., and Charlotte (Haupt) Ament, Kansas City, Mo.; and son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Bonnie Haupt, Spring Hill; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by many friends and extended family.

James was born Nov. 17, 1908, at Burns. He graduated from Newton High School, attended Bethel College for three years, and graduated from Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Science (now Kansas State University) with a degree in mechanical engineering.

He married Kathryn Annabelle Thomas on May 31, 1936. James worked for Cardwell Manufacturing of Wichita for more than 30 years and then for International Petroleum Services at El Dorado until his retirement in 1983, at age 75.

James was a member of West Heights United Methodist Church, Kansas Society of Professional Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers, the Studebaker Drivers Club, Northeast Senior Center, Audubon Society, and Botanica. He played trumpet with the Morgan's Midtowners, sang in the church choir, and was very active as a Boy Scout leader in the 1950s. James and Annabelle traveled extensively and were active in church, politics, and community concerns.

Memorial service was held at West Heights United Methodist Church on Feb. 17, 2006.
