John Schroeder
John A. Schroeder, 88, of Goessel, died Feb. 16, 2002, at Goessel.
He was born April 15, 1913, at Claysburg, Pa., the son of David O. and Catharine (Dively) Lingenfelter. His parents died when was five from the flu epidemic. The Red Cross took him to Newton, and he was adopted by Mrs. Johan Schroeder. She later married Jacob J. Unruh.
On Sept. 6, 1934, he married Bertha Frey at Goessel. The couple lived on a farm at rural Canton and then moved to Goessel in 1973.
He was a farmer and auctioneer and a member of Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Kathleen Bair in 1972; four sisters, Tillie Gilchrist, Hester Claassen, Esther Buller, Elizabeth Rice; brother James Lingenfelter; four step brothers, Arthur Schroeder, Henry Wiebe, Ernest Reimer, Walter Schroeder; and one adopted sister Mary Wiebe Schroeder.
Survivors include his wife of Goessel; sons Donald J. of rural Moundridge and Robert J. of Manhattan; daughter Carolyn Schroeder of rural Canton; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church near Goessel with Revs. James Dunn and Mark Wiens officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.
Memorials have been established with Bethesda Home and Mennonite Central Committee for the Appalachia Project.
