Johnson and Brown compete at state wrestling tournament

Ric Johnson and Matt Brown went to Hays last weekend to compete in the 3-2-1A State Wrestling Tournament.

Johnson competed in the 125 weight class, defeating two of his three opponents.

Brown competed in the 152 weight class, losing both of his matches.

"It was nice to get Matt and Ric to Hays for the state tournament," said Scott O'Hare, head wrestling coach at Hillsboro High School. "Although they are disappointed with not advancing farther in the tournament, the experience of competing there will certainly help them down the road."

O'Hare said he believes the 3-2-1A State Wrestling Tournament could be one of the toughest to place at.

"The atmosphere is so much different than anything these guys see all year long, and the competition is just outstanding," said O'Hare. "This was probably one of the best and most balanced state wrestling tournaments I can remember."

According to O'Hare, both Johnson and Brown had some pretty tough draws. Johnson lost his first match to the eventual state champion while Brown was eliminated by a wrestler from Smith Center who placed third.

"Although neither of them fared too well as far as wins and losses," said O'Hare, "both will be much better prepared going into next season. I really look forward to seeing these two guys, as well as many other team members, develop and improve through next season. I think we have a lot to look forward to."
