Judy Sloan

Julia "Judy" Elizabeth Sloan, 88, of Sweet Home, Ore., died Sept. 25, 2006, at Twin Oaks Nursing Care Center, Sweet Home.

Born Sept. 8, 1918, in Durham, she was the daughter of Ben and Anna Frick.

She graduated from Durham High School, attended McPherson College for two years, and began her teaching career in a one-room rural school. She later finished her master's degree in education from Western Illinois University.

She met her husband, Virgil Sloan, while working at Boeing Aircraft Company, Wichita. After their marriage, the couple lived in Oklahoma, Idaho, and Wyoming where she retired after 44 years of teaching. They moved to Junction City, Ore., and in 1981 to Vancouver, Wash.

She suffered a stroke in June 2004, and moved to a nursing home in Sweet Home.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993, stepson Gene, and brother Melvin.

Survivors include a sister, Delphia Hein and husband Lloyd, Sweet Home; stepdaughter-in-law Sue Sloan; step-grandsons Britt Sloan of Evanston, Wyo., and Richard Sloan of Salt Lake City, Utah; nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 5, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Vancouver, Wash.
