Junior varsity gets by Collegiate in overtime
The junior varsity Trojan football team defeated Wichita Collegiate Monday in an overtime game.
The Spartans scored in the first quarter but couldn't complete the two-point conversion attempt.
In the second quarter, Hillsboro's Jacob Yoder scored on a six-yard run. The extra point was no good.
Neither team could get its offense going in the second half. Hillsboro had a couple of big defensive stops to send the game into overtime.
On the first play in overtime, Yoder scored on a screen pass from quarterback Kyle Kroeker. A Kroeker pass to sophomore Troy Frick was good for the two-point conversion.
"The defense played a solid game as a unit," said coach Scott O'Hare. "The defense stepped up in overtime and held Collegiate."
Sophomore Adam Dirks had seven carries for 20 yards in rushing; freshman Yoder was 11 for 44; and junior Kroeker was one for two.
Kroeker was four for 13 in passing for 64 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore receiver Troy Frick had three catches for 59 yards and Yoder was one for 10.
Defensively, Dirks had four tackles and one assist; Josh Kenney, three tackles, nine assists; Daniel Roble, one tackle, five assists; Yoder, one tackle, five assists, one interception; Jesse Boucher, three tackles seven assists; and Darren Enns, two tackles, five assists.
Hillsboro had 68 yards total rushing and 64 yards passing. Collegiate had 206 yards rushing and 48 yards passing.
