The Hillsboro junior varsity girls' basketball team ended their season on Tuesday with a 40-31 victory at home against Smoky Valley.

"We played four good quarters of basketball," Coach Dennis Boldt said.

"I want to express my appreciation to April Funk and Laci Frantz who did an incredible job in leading the team this season."

The team finished the season with a 19-4 record.

Leading scorer for the team against the Vikings was Funk with 16 points.

Other scorers were Amy Duerksen with six points, Katie Fast and Danielle Goossen with five each, Kara Wasemiller, Danielle Kelley, Marissa Diener, and Frantz with two each.

The team won the JV tournament held last Saturday in Marion by defeating Marion 57-40 in the championship game.

Leading scorers for the team were Funk who had 16 points followed by Emily Ratzlaff with 15.

Other scorers were Fast with 10 points, Frantz with eight, Charity Davis with four, Goossen and Sara Hamm with two each.

In the first game of the tournament against Council Grove, Hillsboro won 43-28. Leading scorers were Fast with 11 points and Davis with 10.

Other scorers were Funk, Frantz, Wasemiller and Diener with four points each, Goossen, Hamm, and Kelley had two each.

"Playing well in two tournament games in one day is difficult to do," said Boldt, "but these girls played eight quarters of great basketball."

"This is the day we wanted to bring it all together. It is the day you hope you play your best basketball. These girls should be proud of winning this tournament," he said.

The girls played at home on Feb. 15 against Ellinwood and won 37-34.

Leading scorer for the team was Funk with 13 points.

"We played very well, having very few substitutes in our rotation," said Boldt. "Coming back from being down so much in the first quarter showed great poise by these girls."

On Feb. 12, the team traveled to Sterling and lost 39-36.

Scoring for the Lady Trojans were Fast with nine points, Funk and Goossen with eight each, Ratzlaff with six, Frantz with four, and Davis with one.

"A disastrous third quarter defensively really made the difference in this game," Boldt said. "We had trouble picking up our girls after missed baskets."
