Bethesda Home worker, Kathy Schmidt, was recognized Oct. 22 for her 20 years of work at the Bethesda Home in Goessel. Schmidt was Northview Developmental Services, Inc.'s (NDS) unanimous choice, and winner of InterHab's 2004 Achievement In The Workplace Award. Schmidt was honored at a dinner at the Wichita Hyatt where many from Goessel turned out to appreciate her commitment to Bethesda and the Goessel community.
"If it weren't for the cost, most of Goessel would have attended," said Barbara Bunting, a representative of Northview Developmental Service,Inc
InterHab is a statewide resource network for persons with disabilities and NDS is a non-for-profit organization serving adults and children with developmental disabilities in Harvey and Marion Counties.
Schmidt started working at Bethesda Home in 1984 in the kitchen. As time went on, it became too difficult for her, and she was moved to housekeeping and laundry. Schmidt has worked there for 12 years and is a valued employee and a hard worker, according to Kathy Miller, Schmidt's supervisor.
"Everyone knows Kathy, and appreciates her hard work," said Linda Peters, Bethesda Home's CEO.
Besides Interhab's award, Schmidt has been recognized with many "Achiever Awards" and "Employment Service Awards" at Bethesda.
"Kathy Schmidt exemplifies Northview's values of independence, productivity, integration, and inclusion," said Bunting.
It's not just her work ethic that makes Schmidt special, she is also very active in the Goessel community, church, and other NDS programs. She's a member of the Tabor Mennonite Church in rural Newton, and works every Thursday at Northview's Greenhouse where she helps with planting, watering, and transplanting as well as other tasks.
"I like working with the plants," said Schmidt.
Schmidt's father, Rudy Schmidt, believes Northview has been integral in improving his daughter's life.
"We always knew she was capable," he said, "we just never thought Kathy would have the opportunities."
And, Schmidt has used those opportunities. Not only has she been employed with Bethesda for 20 years, but she has lived independently in Goessel for 20 years as well. Her independence, productivity, and enthusiasm benefit so many, and make Schmidt a person with ability.
