Kids' wrestling tourney draws nearly 300 years ago

The City of Hillsboro was descended upon by 277 young wrestlers along with their coaches, family and fans at the fourth annual Hillsboro Takedown tournament on Saturday at the Robert C. Brown Gymnasium. The event was sponsored by Ampride and McDonald's of Hillsboro

"This is the largest tournament we have hosted," said coach Corey Burton.

Thirty-eight wrestling clubs were represented at the tournament, coming from cities such as Topeka, Wellington, Wichita, Dodge City, Beloit, Abilene, as well as the surrounding area.

Also present at the tournament were current and former Hillsboro High School wrestlers, who helped referee the tournament. They included senior James Bina, HHS graduates, Chris Coryea, Carson Greenhaw, and Ronnie Davis.

The tournament had just under 500 matches on five mats for the day with five age groups between five and 14, represented and a total of 63 matches.

Hillsboro had 22 wrestlers participating in the tournament.
