In exchange for its generous donation to remodel the snack area at the Hillsboro Family Aquatic Center, the city cheerfully agreed to rename the area for the service club that provided the funds.
This past Tuesday at the Hillsboro Kiwanis Club's 60th anniversary dinner, out-going president Clint Seibel announced that the club would contribute $17,523 for the project.
In return, the city announced it had agreed to re-name the area "Kiwanis Court," and allow the club to use $1,000 of the funds to purchase and install two Kiwanis signs to mark the area.
On behalf of the children who will use the area, Hillsboro Mayor Delores Dalke said she was more than happy to accept the agreement, and the money.
"I think it's wonderful that one of our local groups would think to share their good fortune with the community and particularly, in this case, with the children," Dalke said Monday. "They've made a big contribution to make the pool more user friendly."
Hillsboro City Council members agreed to allow the mayor to sign a "Memo of Understanding" drawn up by the club, which specifies each others roles in the project.
The second paragraph reads, "The food service area which includes the party tent and the patio outside the fence shall be named the "Kiwanis Court." Lettering identifying the area as the "Kiwanis Court" will be mounted on the south end of the bath house as well as an additional sign located on the lawn."
The memo then lists items to be purchased and installed at the facility, including four large tables and four chairs ($6,023.26), six trash cans ($2,009.87), three large planters ($1,791), a 20' diameter "Funbrella," ($3,950), four custom lighting units ($750), and 15 Armur Flame Maple trees ($2,000), to be planted outside, along the south fence. Signage and installation are listed at $500 each.
According to a press release provided by the club, funds for the project came from the sale of Kiwanis-owned property on which the post office was built.
The Hillsboro Kiwanis Club, which has 31 members, also installed the following new officers at its annual meeting: Bob Watson, president; Jayson Hanschu, president-elect; Bryce Wichert, treasurer; and Rod Hamm, secretary. Carl Long, Rich Nikel and Gordon Mohn will serve as directors.
