Klenda to attend Girls State
Jackie Klenda of Lincolnville has been chosen by the Tampa American Legion Auxiliary to attend the 63rd annual session of Sunflower Girls State on the University of Kansas, Lawrence, campus. Sunflower Girls State is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary June 5 through June 10. Jackie is the daughter of Val and Julie Klenda.
Joining approximately 460 other young women who have just completed their junior year of high school, Jackie will "Learn by Doing" the political system in the government of Kansas.
Beginning at the city level, advancing to county and the state, the girls will register to vote, file nomination papers, conduct political campaigns, and make speeches. Rachel Beck, 2004 governor of Sunflower Girls State and Alpa Banker, 2004 Lt. Governor, will assist. Speakers include Gov. Kathleen Sebilus, Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh, department president of the American Legion Auxiliary Beulah Shafer, and other state, county, and city officials.
The girls are housed in Ellsworth Hall and the inauguration will be held in the Lied Performing Arts Center.
