Lady Bluebird netters advance to sub-state

The Lady Bluebird volleyball team advanced out of regionals Tuesday night, defeating Little River in two games and Stafford in three.

Goessel handily defeated Little River 15-11, 15-8, but found themselves floundering against Stafford in their first game against that team. They lost the first contest 3-15.

But the Bluebirds came back to win decisive victories in the final two games, winning by 15-1 and 15-8 margins.

"(The team) did an awesome job of coming out and taking control of games two and three," said coach Sandy Banman.

Goessel advances to sub-state play this weekend at Cunningham. Their first game is against Lucas-Luray at 2 p.m.

Last week at the Heart of America league tournament, the Goessel High School volleyball team finished the week with two wins and two losses.

The two losses in tournament play came against the same two teams that Goessel lost to in the regular season.

Goessel defeated Little River in match one of the Heart of America League Tournament 11-5, 15-10, 15-6. The Bluebirds got off to a slow start but gained confidence as the games progressed.

Against Burrton, the Bluebirds controlled the games 15-6, 15-7.

Inman as the third opponent for the Bluebirds in the Tournament, and Goessel had some difficulty stopping Inman in game one. Inman defeated the Bluebirds 15-6, 10-15, 15-12. In game two with the score tied 6-6, Goessel scored six straight points with Tara Goerzen serving.

Game three was one of the best volleyball games between two evenly matched teams in the league. Goessel garnered am 11-9 lead only to see Inman score three points on the next rotation, and the Teutons were able to finish the game 15-12.

Goessel was defeated by Moundridge in the first match of bracket play 15-3, 15-1. Inman was defeated by Remington in their first bracket match. Moundridge defeated Remington in the finals.
