On Monday, the Goessel High School girls were host to Centre in the first round of the 1A regional tournament and won their last home game 59-55.

Goessel could not score for the first four and a half minutes and trailed 6-0. The Cougars kept the lead at the end of the first quarter 15-8.

Goessel tried to come back and tied the game 21-21 with 2:48 to play in the first half, but Centre did not let the Bluebirds take the lead and led at half time 26-24.

Goessel finally took the lead with a Melinda Stucky lay-up with four minutes to play in the third quarter. The Bluebirds led at the third quarter break 46-43, but Centre would not give up.

A basket and free throw by Jill Fenske, Centre sophomore, tied the game 48-48 with 6:29 left in the game.

Tara Goerzen hit three free throws to give Goessel a 51-48 lead, but a three pointer by Jackie Klenda and a 12-footer by her sister Laura Klenda gave the lead back to the Cougars 53-51.

Melinda Stucky made two free throws to tie the game with 1:57 to play. Jenna Beneke made the last basket for the Cougars with 1:09 to play, giving them a 55-53 lead.

Turnovers plagued both teams as they tried hard to give their team the advantage. T. Goerzen made two free throws and a field goal to give the Bluebirds the lead 57-55 with 10 seconds to play. Becky Schroeder iced the game with two more free throws.

Leading the way for Centre was Raschelle Jirak with 20 points and Laura Klenda with 11.

Scoring for the Bluebirds were Stucky with 34 points, T. Goerzen with 15, Lindsey Unruh with three, Becky Schroeder, Candice Bailey, and Darla Funk with two each, and Carolyn Unruh with one.

The Goessel girls will continue the 1A tournament at Centre at 6 p.m. today.

On Friday, the Bluebirds played at Remington.

The Goessel girls were without playmaker Tara Goerzen and needed to make adjustments for her absence.

Remington jumped out to a first quarter lead of 13-2. To make matters worse, the Broncos got ahead 23-4, before the Bluebirds began to get the ball to go in the basket.

The halftime score was 31-13 and Goessel got as close as 45-37 in the fourth quarter. The game was against a league opponent, but does not count in the league standings.

Scoring for the team were L. Unruh with 14 points, Funk with 13, Stucky with five, Jessica Graber and Bailey with four each, and Brittany Goerzen with one.
