Lady Bluebirds advance to tourney

The Goessel girls won two games and earned a spot in the semifinals of the 1A regional tournament. Goessel defeated Ell-Saline on Friday by a score of 52-35 for the final game of the regular season.
Goessel dominated defensively and jumped out t a 13-2 first quarter lead and coasted the rest of the game leading at the other quarters 31-11, 44-17, and 52-35.
Tara Goerzen started the scoring with a three-pointer and ended with 21 points, 15 coming from long-range. Melinda Stucky followed with 15 points, Katie Schroeder with six, Lindsey Unruh with five, Becky Schroeder with three, and Shannon Schmidt with two.
The first round game of the 1A regional was played against Wakefield on Monday. It was more than four minutes into the game before the Bombers would score. Goessel led at the quarters 22-2, 32-6, 54-12, and 74-17.
Eleven players scored as Coach Brian Holloway emptied his bench early in the game.
Scorers for the Bluebirds were Stucky with 22 points, L. Unruh with 14, B. Schroeder and T. Goerzen with eight each, Katie Schroeder with six, Brittany Goerzen with four, Maggie Rath and Candice Bailey with three each, and Jessica Graber, S. Schmidt, and Darla Funk with two each.
Goessel advances with 63 other 1A teams to the regional semifinals.
The Bluebirds will play again at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at St. Xavier High School in Junction City. The winner will play at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
