The Goessel High School girls' basketball team got off to a slow start Tuesday, trailing Berean 19-20 at half time and by two at the end of three quarters. The Bluebirds waited until the last part of the game to score the last eight points and defeat Berean 50-40.
During 14 minutes of the second half neither team could gain more than a four point lead. Defensive pressure and timely shooting allowed the Bluebirds to soar at the end of the game.
The scoring was fairly balanced for Goessel as they improved their league record to 4-5. Melinda Stucky led in scoring with 15 points. Other scorers were Tara Goerzen with 14 points, Lindsey Unruh with nine, Katie Schroeder and Jessica Graber with six each.
The girls' basketball team finished sixth in the Berean Tournament last week.
Saturday's consolation finals saw the Bluebirds facing the Marion Warriors. Goessel jumped out to an 11-2 lead, but Marion grabbed the lead for the first time in the game just before the half with a score of 22-20. Although the Bluebirds were able to tie the score several times, the Warriors would not trail for the rest of the game and won by a final score of 55-48.
Goessel was led in scoring by Stucky with 17 points, and Darla Funk hit five three-pointers and a lay-up to also finish with 17. Lindsey Unruh scored 11 points and Graber three.
On Thursday the Bluebirds defeated Sunrise Christian Academy by a score of 58-45. Goessel led by 18 at half-time, but Sunrise narrowed the deficit to 48-38 by the end of the third quarter. Goessel was led in scoring by Stucky with 20 points, Funk with 13, L. Unruh with eight, Katie Schroeder with six, Graber with five, and Maggie Rath with two.
In the first round action, the Peabody Warriors took advantage of Goessel's inexperience and led at every quarter 17-11, 34-22, 38-30 and 54-38. Stucky led the Bluebird scoring with 16 points. Other scorers included Funk with nine, Unruh with eight, Schroeder and Rath with two each, and Graber with one.
The Bluebirds will travel for games at Trinity on Friday and Canton next Tuesday.
