Lady Trojans 1-1 to start the season

Sports reporter

A 6-2 loss followed by a 5-4 victory Friday gave Hillsboro High School softball team a 1-1 record.

Laura Lindsey pitched a complete game three-hitter in game one, but errors and walks contributed to the loss.

Three of the errors and one walk came in a three-run Hoisington third-inning.

"This shook us up a little bit," first-year head coach Stephanie Sinclair said. "With so many sophomores in the game I thought it was a good game to get under our belts."

The Trojans scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, but it wasn't enough for the victory.

Angie Bina, Jenesa Klose, and Lindsey recorded all three hits for the Trojans in the first game.

Game two was a different story for Hillsboro, but not until late.

Trailing 2-0 in the fifth inning, the Trojans smacked two hits and recorded three runs to take the lead.

Bina recorded an RBI-triple and scored on an error in the inning.

Hoisington notched two runs in the sixth to reclaim the lead, but it didn't last long.

Right fielder Rachelle Goldsby hit a one-out single, followed by a Bina single. Lindsay then walked to load the bases with one out. Number three hitter Klose then reached on an error allowing the winning runs to score.

"We made a better transition into game two," Sinclair said. "Defensively we only committed two errors and we really made some heads-up plays."

One of those plays was center fielder Suzy Lindsay's throw to catcher Jessica Klose to nail a would-be run to end the seventh inning.

Bina, Jessica Klose, and Steph Abbott also recorded a double-play in the game.

The Trojans are 1-1 overall and in the league, and Sinclair is optimistic about her young team.

"I'm excited to see what these girls will continue to do," she said.

After playing host this past Tuesday to Lyons, the Trojans will be in action again Tuesday when they face Marion-Florence/ Peabody-Burns.
