As the regular season winds down, Hillsboro girls' coach Dale Honeck knows the tougher the competition the Lady Trojans face, the more prepared they'll be for post-season p lay.

Which is why Honeck wasn't overly excited Friday when the Trojans (15-3) doused Halstead's Lady Dragons, 54-21, in the last regular season game in the Hillsboro gym.

After a trip to play Lyons Tuesday, the Trojans' regular season ends Friday with a 6 p.m. tip-off against Smoky Valley in Lindsborg.

Of course, Honeck wasn't really unhappy that his team made hash of Halstead.

"We played a lot of kids and that's always good," Honeck said.

But. . .

"At this time of the year, it's nice to play some people that make you play hard for 32 minutes, and get your top seven in there to work against some tough competition. That's something we need."

Nevertheless. . .

"It was really a nice way to finish it for the seniors, though. All of them got substantial playing time and all of them scored. It was a good game for the seniors."

For the night, seniors Hannah Marsh, JuliAnne Chisholm, Lora Andrews, and Tina Frick combined for 32 points with eight each.

With a 25-12 lead at halftime, Marsh's basket to start the second half led to a 23-1 scoring blitz by Hillsboro.

After scoring just one point in the third quarter and trailing, 48-13, going into the fourth, the Dragons were spared prolonged agony by the mercy rule, which kept the game clock running because of the 30-point spread.
