Lady Trojans roll Wamego

With only one game under its belt to start the new year, Hillsboro coach Dale Honeck thought his squad might have a battle against Wamego Monday night in the opening round of the Trojan Classic.

As it turned out, the battle was all in his mind.

The winless Raiders hit a horrendous 6-for-31 from the floor, while the top-seeded Trojans (7-1) got a combined 27 points from Tina Frick and JuliAnne Chisholm to smash the Red Raiders, 48-25.

"I was worried about that coming in here because Wamego had lost to some pretty good 4A teams," Honeck said.

"Our girls played good defense, it was good game to get everybody in. The kids played well."

Frick led all scorers with 15 and Chisholm added 12 in a game that Honeck was able to get nearly everybody playing time.

The Trojans' inside tandem of Chisholm and Frick should get a real test against the Buffaloes' 6-3 center Amanda Pierson, who dumped a double-double on TMP with 22 points, 11 rebounds, while blocking five shots.

Hillsboro put the game away with a 16-4 second quarter, amidst shooting a blistering 56 percent the second half — 51 for the game — with the Raiders trying to catch up at the free-throw line, making 13-for-18.

The Trojans went into the break with a commanding 30-10 lead and Wamego never made a serious challenge.

Up next for the Trojans is a second round meeting Friday at a time to be determined with the Republic County Lady Buffaloes, who cruised past Thomas More Prep, 41-27.
