Lady Trojans split two with Haven
The Lady Trojans had an up-and-down doubleheader Tuesday evening against visiting Haven, winning the first game 5-0 and losing the second 5-1.
Game one saw the Hillsboro squad playing solid defense early but failing to score any runs. They didn't put a point on the board until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Kara Wasemiller's RBI brought in first baseman Emily Donahue from second.
The fifth inning saw the Trojans get three quick outs with four batters, but the sixth brought them roaring out front. Holly Lindsay hit a single to get on base, and Donahue headed to first after a walk. A fine bunt by Julie Wall had the bases loaded for the Trojans with just one out.
Up next was Wasemiller, who was called out on strikes. But Amy Duerksen came to the rescue with two outs, hitting a single to bring in Lindsay. The next hitter, Shelby Estelle, hit a double that brought in Donahue, Wall, and Duerksen.
The Trojans now had the 5-0 lead, which they held onto until the end of the game. Pitcher Lindsay had another stellar outing, striking out eight and giving up just three hits.
The second game wasn't so successful for the Trojans. The first three innings found the Hillsboro batters going down one-two-three. Finally, in the fourth, Robyn Penner was able to score a run, but the girls weren't able to inch their total any higher. Haven bounced back from their earlier loss to take the 5-1 win.
"In the past, Haven's always been a good softball team," said Trojan Head Coach Carolyn Long.
Long was pleased with the team's first game, but errors proved too costly in the second, she said.
Long continues to be pleased with Lindsay's strong pitching and hitting performances.
"She has one of the highest (batting) averages on the team," Long said.
Canton-Galva
Team two of the season proved to be an easy one for the Lady Trojans as they swept Canton-Galva on Thursday, April 5.
In game one, the Trojans slugged away at Canton-Galva's pitching, hitting .370 as a team with eleven runs and one home run, hit by Penner. They won 11-0, and the game was called in the fifth because of the ten-run rule.
Lindsay was the woman of the hour, with a great game on both sides of the plate. The pitcher fanned ten batters while walking just one. Up at bat, she went three of four, with three singles.
In game two, the Trojans continued their winning ways, again crushing C-G 14-4. The game gave some time on the mound to freshman hurler Marissa Diener, who got the win while allowing four runs and nine hits and striking out five.
