The Hillsboro High School softball season opened last Thursday on a down note, losing two games to the Marion Warriors.
In the first game of the evening's doubleheader, Hillsboro took an early 1-0 lead in the game when senior Robyn Penner scored off of a Holly Lindsay bunt.
Hillsboro had several good chances to up their lead but couldn't capitalize on Marion throwing errors. At the top of the seventh, with senior Emily Donahue on second, April Funk struck out to end Hillsboro's half of the inning.
Marion stepped up to the challenge in the bottom of the seventh. A throwing error by Hillsboro brought in one Warrior runner, tying the game. Another error and another run, and Marion had the 2-1 win.
In game two of the doubleheader, Marion struck first. With two outs in the bottom of the third, Marion players Wear and Zogelman got on base. Moore then stepped to the plate and hit a single to drive in both runners.
Hillsboro responded in the very next inning, thanks to a triple by Emily Ratzlaff. Julie Wall then got on base thanks to a Marion error, and both eventually scored to tie up the game at 2-2.
Marion responded in the sixth. With two out, Moore hit a double, advanced to third when Emmy Powers was thrown out at first, and scored on Thomas's double.
The Trojans couldn't overcome the deficit in the top of the seventh and lost 3-2.
The doubleheader didn't prove to be a stellar day for Trojan hitting — the team hit just .160 in the first game and .115 in the second. But a bright spot was senior Emily Donahue, who went two for three in the first game.
Pitcher Holly Lindsay had two strong outings. She struck out seven batters on the evening while walking just one. Lindsay gave up two earned runs.
Tuesday's road game at Lyons was canceled because of bad weather.
