Lady Trojans take three of four
The Hillsboro softball team took their winning ways on the road Tuesday evening, splitting two games with hosting Nickerson.
Hillsboro won the opening game 4-0 off another strong pitching performance from senior Holly Lindsay. She struck out six, walked two, and gave up only three hits in seven innings.
The Trojans scored early in Game One, as Emily Donahue's single brought in Robyn Penner for the first run of the day. She would come in for another run in the top of the seventh. Lindsay scored the team's two other runs in the third and fifth innings.
In Game Two, Nickerson got off to a quick start, scoring five runs within the first two innings. They added two more in the fourth.
Hillsboro rallied in the sixth, scoring three runs in that inning and then three more in the seventh, but they couldn't get any further and took the 7-6 loss.
Smoky Valley
In last Friday's home game against Smoky Valley, the Trojans swept the visiting Vikings in two games, 6-1, 5-2.
In game one, the fourth and fifth innings proved crucial for Hillsboro. Smoky Valley drove in one run in the top of the third, leaving Hillsboro behind 1-0. But Lindsay and Emily Ratzlaff both scored in the fourth, and in the fifth Donahue, Robyn Penner, April Funk, and Danielle Goosen all crossed the plate. The Trojans won 6-1.
Middle innings were again kind to the Trojans in game two, as Julie Wall scored once in the fourth and Andrea Duerksen and April Funk each scored in the third and fourth innings.
Smoky Valley was behind 5-1 going into the seventh, but they could only bring in one runner, giving Hillsboro the 5-2 lead.
