Laura Lindsay and the Hillsboro High School softball team continued its roll with four victories this past week. The four-game sweep gives the Trojans a six-game winning streak, and a 7-1 overall record.
Lindsay led the Trojans in game one April 11 against the Marion-Florence/Peabody-Burns Warriors. She allowed just two run in seven innings, as Hillsboro knocked off its cross-county rival, 7-2.
"The girls were really fired up to play [the Warriors]," head coach Stephanie Sinclair said.
It showed early as the Trojans jumped ahead in the first inning. Amanda Bina led off the inning with a double, and Lindsay reached with a single. Both would score to give HHS a 2-0 lead. The score would remain the same until the fourth when MFPB tallied a run. Hillsboro got a run back and led 3-1.
Four more runs in the final two innings wrapped up the five-run victory. Bina was the leader at the plate for HHS with a double and a triple.
The harsh wind and the Trojan offense stayed fierce in the second game as HHS cruised to a 16-1 five-inning victory. Lindsay recorded another victory, and Bina was the leading hitter again going 4-4 with two singles, a double, a triple, and four runs scored. Laura Skiles contributed three hits and two runs, and Suzy Lindsay had a walk, hit, and two runs scored.
"Laura pitched well in both games," Sinclair said. "I felt she really kept the batters off balance."
Sinclair obviously was happy with how her team swung the bat as well.
"Our hitting is improving each game with our team average at .350," she said.
Friday the Trojans won big again, this time sweeping Nickerson, 9-1 and 12-1. Lindsay improved to 4-1 on the mound after game one. She also came through with two singles and two runs. Seven players scored runs in the game. But it was the defense that impressed Sinclair.
"We played great defense with only one error the whole night," she said. "Both pitchers really kept the batters guessing."
Jen Klose was the wining pitcher in game two, improving to 3-0 on the season. She pitched a complete game, allowing just three hits and one run.
Steph Abbott had two hits, a run, and an RBI for the Trojans.
"Our base running was also good," Sinclair said. "We took advantage of Nickerson when errors were made, especially in game two."
