Lady Trojans win three in a row
Second seed at sub-state with 13-7 record
Hillsboro High School girls' basketball team made it three in a row Tuesday night with a 34-21 win over visiting Hoisington.
The game was tied 9-8 at the end of the first quarter and the Trojans had a 15-11 lead at the half.
Cold shooting and playing three games on the road in five days might have contributed to Hillsboro's slow start.
"We just didn't have our legs under us," said head coach Becky Carlson. "We seemed a step slow. A win is a win and we are glad to have it."
Sophomore JuliAnne Chisholm led the team with 14 points. Sophomore Hannah Marsh and senior Amy Duerksen each scored nine points and senior Emily Ratzlaff, two points.
The Trojans are seeded second at Lyons' sub-state. They will play Monday at home.
Last Saturday the Trojans traveled to Smoky Valley for a makeup game.
"This was the best game we've played," Carlson said. "We just played great. We had balanced scoring and good defense."
Marsh had 23 points in the victory. Ratzlaff scored 15 and dished out five assists. Chisholm had nine points and nine rebounds and sophomore Megan Peachey canned eight. Sophomore Tina Frick came off the bench to score four points and pull down six rebounds. Other scorers were Audrey Wienbrenner two and Duerksen one.
Last Friday, Hillsboro traveled to Ellinwood, defeating the much improved Eagles 50-45.
The Trojans led 26-13 at half time and 36-20 at the end of the third quarter. Ellinwood poured in 25 points to Hillsboro's 14 in the fourth quarter to keep in the ball game interesting.
"We started out good," said Carlson. "It wasn't so much what we did or didn't do as it was what Ellinwood did."
The Trojans committed 11 turnovers, many in the fourth quarter. Only four Trojans scored in the game.
Chisholm scored 22 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and blocked four shots. Ratzlaff had 16 points; Marsh, 10; and Peachey, two.
