Lady Warriors hang on for seventh place

Peabody-Burns High School Lady Warriors traveled this past week to Berean Academy for the Eli J. Walter girls' tournament.
The team lost Jan. 24 to Burrton, 42-32, lost Thursday to Bennington, 48-33, and defeated Douglass Saturday, 56-47.
The Lady Warriors claimed seventh place in the eight-team tournament. PBHS will be back in action this week with two home games.
Both offenses in the Burrton match-up had trouble scoring in the first quarter. Burrton had a one-point edge at the buzzer, 7-6. Jessi Hilliard had four points and Tabitha O'Neal added a basket.
Racquel Castillo hit a two early in the second to give the Warriors a one-point lead. Hilliard later added a free throw to tie the score at nine.
Burrton then went on a 15-0 run, and led 24-9 at halftime.
More Lady Warriors were involved in the offense in the third quarter as the team scored 12 points. Elaina Newell, Traci Windsor, and Hilliard each hit three-pointers. Becki Morris added a basket and Jessica Gillet added a free throw.
The PBHS defense held Burrton to six and the deficit was nine at the end of the quarter, 30-21.
PBHS got as close as six late in the fourth, but Burrton took the first-round victory, 42-32. Hilliard had eight points in the period and Windsor added a three-pointer.

Second round
Perimeter shooting helped the Lady Warriors stay close to Bennington Thursday in the second round of the tournament.
Newell had two three-pointers in the first quarter, Castillo had a three-pointer, and Hilliard added a free throw. The Lady Warriors stilled trailed at the end of the first quarter, 13-10.
The PBHS defense held Bennington to eight in the second quarter. Newell nailed a three with 12 seconds until halftime to pull PBHS within two, 21-19. Also scoring in the quarter was Hilliard with four points and O'Neal with two.
The Bennington offense went up by seven in the third, but PBHS was able to get within three on a shot from Newell at the buzzer, 31-28.
Newell also had two free throws, Laura Hoffman and Windsor each had two points.
Newell nailed her fifth three-pointer of the game to tie it at 31 early in the fourth. The only other offense was one free throw each from Hoffman and Windsor. PBHS was unable to take the lead and the Lady Warriors were defeated, 48-33.

Seventh-place game
The PBHS offense came on strong in the first quarter of the seventh-place game with Douglass, scoring 16 points.
Hilliard led with eight points, Newell had five, Morris had a basket, and Hoffman added a free throw. The Lady Warriors had the edge at the end of the first, 16-13.
Douglass came back to take the lead with less than three minutes to play in the first half. The PBHS offense responded and went to the locker room with a five-point lead, 31-26. Windsor and Hilliard each had four points, Newell had three, and Gillet and Hoffman each had two points.
PBHS opened a large lead in the third with aggressive defense and offense. Hilliard had four points, Newell and Windsor three points, and Hoffman and Gillet each had a basket, as PBHS led 45-32 at the end of three.
Hilliard added 10 points for good measure in the final quarter and Newell had one point as the Lady Warriors claimed seventh-place with a 56-47 victory.
