Learning in Retirement program releases fall schedule

Tabor College 60+ Learning in Retirement program will begin the fall schedule Sept. 26 with Robba Moran, wife of U.S. Congressman Jerry Moran.

Coffee will be served before the first session, from 9:30 to 10 a.m.

Upcoming sessions include Oct. 3, "Poverty and Disaster Around the Globe: Challenges to U.S. Involvement." Landon Fulmer, a 2003 Tabor College graduate living in Washington, D.C., will reflect on his recent fact-finding trip with U.S. Senator Sam Brownback to Aceh, Indonesia. There they observed reconstruction efforts following the 2004 tsunami.

On Oct. 10, the program will be "Tunes and Tales of a Traveling Troubadour." Thad Beach, a versatile musician from Salina, will play harmonica and guitar simultaneously.

"The Waterways of China," will be presented Oct. 17 by Lowell Ratzlaff of Denver, Colo. He is known for his beautiful videography and will take viewers to modern and ancient China, first sailing the mighty Yangtze River, then cruising the Li River in southern China, and concluding with the man-made Grand Canal in central China.

The Oct. 31 program will be presented by author Wilma Dick Wall of Reedley, Calif. With "From South China to Post Oak to San Joaquin Valley," she will tell of her childhood in China that served as the inspiration behind her latest novel.

An optional lunch with the author will follow in the Blue-Gold Room.

"What It's Like to be a Storm Chaser," will be the Nov. 7 program. Val Castor, a weatherman with KWTV Channel 9, Oklahoma City, will show exciting tornado videos.

On Nov. 14, the program will be "The MARP Menu Includes SOOP — Have Some!" and will be presented by Helen Lapp of Souderton, Pa. She will explain her organization for retirees.

"The Story Behind the Book Running with Payne," will be presented Nov. 21. Randy Ellis, father of current Tabor student Nicole Ellis, read about a transcontinental running race in 1928 to publicize the new Route 66. Ellis decided to run the route himself and will compare it then and now.

"Glimpses of Paraguay Today," will be presented Nov. 28 by former Tabor College professor Don Isaac. He will show and tell of his recent visit to Paraguay and Brazil.

The Dec. 5 program will be the "Annual Christmas Coffee and Carols" presented by Elyria Christian High School choir, directed by Jody Herwig.

Older adults are invited to attend the programs. Enrollment is $15 per person for the semester, $28 per couple, or $4 a session. First-time visitors will be admitted free of charge. Registration and discount lunch cards are available at the door.
