LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Possible war is political gambit

To the Editor:

Recent American policy toward Iraq is heading for disaster. CIA Director George Tenet and former United Nations chief weapons inspector Scott Ritter have both independently confirmed that there is no evidence that Saddam has any significant weapons of mass destruction capability.

Thus, there is no rational reason to invade Iraq, starting a war that would cost thousands of American and Iraqi lives and possibly de-stabilize the entire Middle East or result in expensive long-term occupation of Iraq.

This is a political gambit; the American people are being played by a power-hungry tyrant . . . and not the one in Iraq. There is no doubt that Saddam Hussein is brutal, oppressive and evil. But the United States cannot and should not act as the world's police force. Therefore we declare that such a war is immoral, irrational and counter to the teachings of Jesus Christ, Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr.

In light of these facts, three colleges — Bethel, Tabor, and Hesston — have organized a mass protest to take place in Newton with this message: "choose life, not death in Iraq."

On Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, starting at 10 a.m. and beginning on "the Green" (centrally located in front of the Bethel College administration building), we invite you and anyone else to join a non-violent walk with us.

We will march from Bethel to the Newton Post office to deliver hand-written letters to governmental officials and Iraqi victims. Bring letters, signs and the spirit of optimism to let the world know that this war will never be conducted in our name.
