Lions snap softball team's eight game winning streak

Hillsboro's (10-4) second brush with the top-notch Lyons Lady Lions Tuesday night was supposed to be a good tune-up before regionals.

Therefore, dropping a pair to the Lions had to be a hard pill to swallow for the Trojans. Not only did the Lions' sweep put the brakes on Hillsboro's eight-game winning streak, but the Trojans lost leads in both games.

Nevertheless, Lyons swiped a doubleheader, 7-4 and 4-3, respectively.

Marissa Diener and the Trojans fell behind 1-0 in the opener after surrendering an RBI single.

Hillsboro quickly responded in the bottom of the second with Emily Ratzlaff letting a two-run double rip to give the Trojans the lead.

They lost footing in the top of the second with the Lions reclaiming the lead for good with a three-run inning.

Giving up 10 hits, Diener surrendered a two-run triple and a sacrifice bunt as part of Lyons' three-hit second.

Trailing 4-3 heading into the sixth, the Trojans had the floor give way with the Lions putting the game out of reach with a pair of singles, one for two runs in the catastrophic half of the inning.

The Trojans still had one last crack to cut into the lead, down to their final three outs.

As Hillsboro's last hope, Erin Wiebe kept the game going with a two-out two-base hit to score the final run.

The late game's sixth inning also proved to be a pivotal one for the Trojans.

Clinging for dear life to a 3-1 lead, a costly error allowed the Lions to knot the game against Hillsboro's Laura Lindsay.

The Lions scored the winning run in the top half of the seventh with Lindsay giving up an RBI single.

Hillsboro travels Monday to Inman for a 4:30 p.m. meeting with the Lady Teutons.
