Local artist inspires others

Staff writer

Moving from painting to painting, from painter to painter, Letty Enns spends her Monday evenings engulfed in art.

"It's something I've always done," says Enns about her art.

She paints for others and herself using oils and watercolors.

"I'm working on painting my whole family," she says. "Portraits are the hardest to paint, but I do like to do them. Right now I'm doing portraits of my twin grandchildren for their graduation."

Enns has eight grandchildren and had three children.

About eight years ago, friends Delores and Jeanie Funk asked Enns to teach an art class, and she's been doing it ever since. The group usually numbers around nine, and they meet in the kitchen at Trinity Church on Monday evenings, except in the summer.

"We take the summer off," said Doris Guhr. "Some of us are farm ladies."

Enns helps the artists mixing colors, offering a brush, fixing a leaf here, and touching up an eye there.

"I end up with paint all over me."

Enns paints all her tools with some shade of blue so that she can find them at the end of the evening.

The class offers the chance to get away from everyday distractions.

"I never paint at home," said Jeanie Funk.

The artists enjoy the opportunity to get together and offer each other inspiration, compliments and motivation.

"It's difficult to paint at home," said Enns, "There's just something about getting out."

When the class starts up after the summer break, they will all begin working on the same project. After they each finish their interpretation, they get started on whatever they want. The Hillsboro Public Library will have a display of the art work created by the class in May.
