Local college students honored
Alvarez named to honor society
Laci Jo Alvarez of Hillsboro accepted membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and will be honored during a campus ceremony in the fall at Kansas State University.
The NSCS is a national non-profit honors organization that recognizes first- and second-year undergraduate students who excel academically. The society was established on the principle that with scholarship comes a responsibility to develop leadership and a duty to perform service.
Alvarez is also a member of the Kappa Alpha chapter of Chi Omega Sorority, where she holds the position of New Member Educator Assistant.
Alvarez, the daughter of Joe and Debbie Alvarez of Hillsboro, is on the dean's honor list in the college of business administration.
KSU announces
spring honors
Kansas State University awarded 1,660 students with honors for outstanding academic performance during the past semester.
Students must rank in the top 10 percent of their class within their respective college and be enrolled in at least 12 semester hours of graded course work.

Butler names
honor students
Butler County Community College has announced its spring honor roll for students enrolled in at least 12 credit hours.
Those named to the President's Honor Roll (4.0 grade point average) were Marissa Anstett, Hillsboro; Jodi Wiebe, Burns; Irene Yates and Joseph Arocha, Marion; and Mark Bouray, Lincolnville.
Named to the Dean's Honor Roll (3.5 to 3.99) was Nicolette Hartung, Burns.
Named honorable mention (3.0 to 3.49) were Cynthia Miller of Hillsboro and Roberta Winter of Marion.
There were 287 students named to the president's roll, 435 to the dean's roll, and 457 to honorable mention out of a total enrollment of 7,500.
De Witt earns Barton honors
Brenda De Witt of Durham was named to the Barton County Community College for the spring 2002 semester. To qualify students must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours and maintained a 3.5 to 3.99 GPA.
Baltzer makes dean's honor roll at Bethany
Michael Baltzer of rural Lehigh was one of 186 students named to the spring semester dean's honor roll. Students must be full-time and maintain a 3.50 GPA to be on the dean's list.
He is the son of Doug and Shirley Baltzer, rural Lehigh.
Bowers reports to Marine Corps
Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Daniel W. Bowers, son of Julia M. Mathison of Chewelah, Wash., and Anthony M. Bowers of rural Lehigh, recently reported for duty with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 13, Marine Air Group 13, 3rd Marine Air Wing, Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Ariz.
Bowers is a 2000 graduate of Jenkins High School of Chewelah, Wash., and joined the Marine Corps in August 2000.
