Local teams do well at MAYB tourney
11th- and 12-grade boys take first in their division
Four local teams placed in Hillsboro's Mid-America Youth Basketball tournament last weekend, which ran Friday through Sunday.
In the 11th- and 12th-grade boys' division, the Hillsboro team took first place in the A bracket to claim the division title. They went undefeated in pool play.
The squad featured four Hillsboro players: Toby Berg, Eric Weinbrenner, Daniel Deckert, and Derek Hamm. Also joining the team were Patrick Harrison of Haysville, Trey Burgan of St. John, and Kyle Neufeld of Moundridge. Hillsboro's Rod Hamm coached the team.
In the seventh-grade girls' division, Hillsboro took second place in the bracket after winning one and losing two in pool play.
Eight players competed on that squad, which was coached by Hank Wiebe: Audrey Weinbrenner, Jenesa Klose, Greta Wiebe, Samantha Heinrichs, Jessica Klose, Amanda Faber, Amy Neufeld, and Bobbi Jo Carlson.
Over in the eighth-grade boys' division, a Marion County team comprised of players from Goessel, Hillsboro, Durham, and Tampa won third place in bracket play after going undefeated in pool play.
Members of the Wizards included Nate Holmes, Jordan Voth, Michael Suderman, Troy Frick, Brett McIntosh, Adam Dirks, Lucas Hamm, Tyler Kaufman, and Alex Nuss. The team was coached by Preston Neufeld.
Another local team took second place in the B bracket of the fifth- and sixth-grade boys' division. The HG Magic, coached by Dave Loewen, went one and two in pool play.
Members of that team included Clay Shewey, Daniel Jost, Landon Unruh, Thad Holmes, Travis Fensky, William Munguya, Austin McCullough, David Loewen, Kendall Voth, and Andy Klassen.
An all-Goessel team competed in the ninth- and tenth-grade boys' division. They went winless in pool play.
Members of that team, coached by Shelley Buller, included Zach Plenert, Tyler Schroeder, Travis Buller, Ryan Janzen, Justin Fensky, Jake Unruh, Garrett Hiebert, and Chad Schrag.
Several other area hoopsters competed on teams from around the area.
Grant Shewey and Jesse Allen played for the Central Kansas Lightning in the fourth-grade boys' division. In the eighth-grade girls' division, Tina Frick, Jessica Heidel, and Courtney Berkholtz competed with Hesston, and JuliAnne Chisholm played with the Jammers.
A local team also competed in the fifth- and sixth-grade girls' division. That team, the Hillsboro Lightning, went one and two in pool play.
Dave Kroeker coached the squad, which included Tiffany Rooker, Sara Heidel, Kasidy Luthi, Jet Skiles, Jessica Elliott, Cassie McBride, Cassie Kroeker, Carrie Tippin, Candace Ediger, and Aby Humber.
