Locals file for re-election; deadline is Tuesday

If you want to run for a local office, you've got until noon of next Tuesday to file for the spot.

Tuesday, Jan. 21, is the deadline to file for a Hillsboro office. The general election is April 25.

In Hillsboro, two seats will be up on the City Council, and four seats will be up on the USD 410 Board of Education.

For the City Council, the west ward seat held by Len Coryea and the east ward seat held by Matt Hiebert are both up for election. Both men have filed for re-election.

Other than Coryea and Hiebert, no one else had filed for those spots as of Monday, Jan. 13.

The mayor's term is also up, and she is expected to re-file for the position.

On the school board, four seats are up for election: districts one, two, three, and seven.

District 1 is a rural area that encompasses Durham, Logan Township, and Moore Township. Debbie Geis currently holds that seat, and she has filed for re-election.

District 2 is also a rural district and includes Lehigh and Risley Township, extending from 250th Road on the north to 190th Road on the south. That position is held by Brenda Enns, and as of Monday, she had not filed for re-election.

District 3 includes the Gale Township area east of Hillsboro as well as the Liberty and East Branch townships south of town. Cal Jost represents this district, and he also had not filed for re-election as of Monday. He is serving as president of the board.

The District 7 position is at-large, which means it doesn't have specific boundary lines within the school district. Reg Matz currently holds this seat, and he too hadn't filed for re-election as of Monday.

In fact, on Monday, the only newcomer to the elections was Kevin Suderman. Suderman has filed for the District 7 seat.

Those interested in running for the school board must file their intentions with the county clerk's office in Marion. But those looking to run for a City of Hillsboro office must file with the city clerk.

Many people who run for office usually file at the last minute, even the morning of the deadline, according to the county clerk's office.

For more information, contact the City of Hillsboro at 947-3162 or the Marion County Courthouse at 382-2185.
