Lohrenz Memorials dedicated to Tabor

A founder of Tabor College in Hillsboro, who also served as president from 1908 -1931, Dr. H. W. Lohrenz was honored on May 8, in front of the classical facade of the Lohrenz Administration Building which he helped design.

Two granite markers, recently completed and installed, were presented to the college and dedicated at a service attended by members of the family.

The larger of the two markers was donated by Dr. Henry D. Remple of Lawrence and his wife, Mariana Lohrenz Remple, daughter of Dr. Lohrenz. This project had been planned but was not completed before her untimely stroke and death in September 2000. Their daughter, Dr. Lucy J. Remple McAllister of Afton, Minn., completed the project design and sculpture for a bronze bas-relief portrait of Dr. Lohrenz.

A smaller marker was also dedicated in memory of both Dr. Lohrenz and his daughter, Mariana, who at the age of 15 began serving as her father's unpaid Tabor College secretary. This marker was donated by Dr. Remple.

A garden landscape will be created surrounding the two monuments and will be dedicated at Tabor's homecoming on Oct. 9, 2004.

Participants in the dedication service included Rev. Gaylord L. Goertzen, Sr. Pastor of Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church; Peggy Goertzen, Director, Center for Mennonite Brethren Studies, Tabor College; Dr. Remple; Larry Nikkel, President, Tabor College; Dr. Lucy McAllister, and The Rev. Dr. Loring McAllister.

A Trumpet Trio performed Prelude and Postlude hymnody arranged by Steve Hanneman and performed by Paul Epp, Lewis Hagen, and Hanneman.

Guests included Dr. Remple's nieces and a nephew, children of his deceased sister, Agatha Rempel Krieger, of Lawrence: Hildegard Krieger Thiessen and her husband, Wilmer Thiessen, of Hillsboro; Nelda Krieger Thiessen and her husband, Virgil Thiessen, Henderson, Nebraska; and Edgar Krieger, Lawrence.
