Mabel Suderman

Mabel (Wedel) Suderman, 100, of Hillsboro, died Oct. 26, 2002, at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro. She had lived there since 1996.

Born Dec. 21, 1901, in rural Moundridge, she was the daughter of John C. and Nettie (Jantz) Wedel. The family moved to a farm near Tampa when she was three.

She went to Bell Top School for eight years; Hillsboro Bible Academy, two years; and Bethel College Academy, two years. She taught in rural schools for four years.

On Aug. 11, 1926, she married John P. Suderman in rural Tampa. He preceded her in death in 1979.

After her marriage, she continued her education at Bethel College. After a year of teaching at Hillsboro Bible Academy with her husband, they served as missionaries in Arizona among the Hopi Indians where they served from 1930 through 1947.

They also served congregations in Berne, Ind.; Mountain Lake, Minn.; Pandora, Ohio; and Lynden, Wash.

They retired to Winona Lake, Ind., and served in children's camps and on an interim missionary assignment in Mississippi.

She was a missionary and pastor's wife and a member of Central Heights Mennonite Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband; brother, Waldo Wedel; sisters, Ida Unruh and Sadie Schwartz; and grandson, David Dougherty.

Survivors include a son, John M. Suderman and his wife Alice of North Newton; daughter, Edith Dougherty and husband John of Oneonta, N.Y.; brother, Nathan Wedel of Newton; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Oct. 30 at Trinity Mennonite Church in Hillsboro with Pastor Tim Kliewer officiating. Burial was at Haven of Rest Cemetery in rural Hillsboro.

Victor J. Funk

Victor J. Funk, 87, of Hesston, died Oct. 25, 2002, at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

Born July 9, 1915, in Risley Township in Marion County, he was the son of Gerhard and Sarah (Bartel) Funk.

He mainly grew up in the Hillsboro community except for several years in Montana. On June 5, 1945, he married E. Ruby Funk at rural Goessel. They resided in Newton until moving to Schowalter Villa one year ago.

He was a member of Tabor Mennonite Church and a maintenance worker for the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Survivors include his wife of Newton; son, Bruce of Carrolton, Texas; brother, Harvey Funk of Shafter, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Services were held Oct. 30 at Tabor Mennonite Church near Goessel with Rev. Corey Miller officiating. Burial was at Tabor Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Tabor Mennonite Church.
