Main Street Minute
By LAVONNE CARRINGTON

When I came to Hillsboro, one of the first questions I asked was "What is that big red building at Main and D Street?"
I have since learned that Main Street Ministries is a Christ-centered organization where people can go when they need food, a safe place to stay, wise and godly counsel, encouragement, prayer, and more.
Lillian Bookless and staff, and the board of directors of Main Street Ministries, do an excellent job of fulfilling the mission statement of this not-for-profit organization, "to demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ to those oppressed physically and spiritually by providing physical and spiritual resources in a supportive environment."
In addition, members of local churches and individuals throughout Marion County and elsewhere, are quick to provide support when there is a need. Even children volunteer their services. What a blessing!
People whose needs are met at MSM are called sojourners.
A sojourner is a temporary dweller, one who is on a journey, one who is going to a destination (as opposed to going in circles).
Each sojourner signs a "lifestyle contract" and attends weekly gatherings and Bible study. They are encouraged to disclose financial concerns, and work hard at correcting problems in that area. (Debt counseling is available at no charge).
Sojourners are encouraged to provide service to others, find employment, and earn their keep. Of course, alcohol and drugs are not allowed on the property at any time.
Jesus said "Inasmuch as you have done it unto the least of these, my brethren, you have done it unto Me."
I thank God for this group of God's servants who are willing to help provide shelter, food, and support to those in need.
I invite you to join this ministry. The need for monetary support to offset general operating costs is urgent, especially as Christmas draws near. In addition, the sidewalk project must be finished before bad weather approaches. Volunteers are always welcome, and the food bank needs to be restocked each week.
