Hillsboro City Council approved contracts Tuesday with Reiss & Goodness Engineers of Wichita for the Lincoln Street project. The project involves the replacement of 3,700 feet of water pipes. The city received a Community Development Block Grant for $155,500 to help fund the project with an estimated cost of $311,000.

Dan Baldwin, city attorney, is continuing his review for the city of Ordinance No. 1099. The ordinance amends Chapter 4A of the code of the city which pertains to the abatement of dangerous structures and other nuisance property conditions within the city.

"In the past, every time property owners were cited under, they came to the council and it became a political issue," said mayor Delores Dalke. "So we did nothing. We couldn't keep a public officer so we drew up the ordinance to avoid the politics of the issue."

City administrator Steve Garrett told the council his office is still waiting to hear from FEMA if the city will receive funds to help pay for ice storm damage. According to Garrett, the cleanup from the ice storm is ongoing.

In other business council:

— Garrett reported city employees recently started a 10-hour OSHA safety program.

— Garrett reported no one from the public attended recent Hillsboro Planning Commission public meetings.

— Garrett reported he hopes to have quotes for renovations to the city hall rest rooms this week.

The city council went into executive session for 20 minutes at 4:45 to discuss trade secrets.
