Marion County Lake topic of first 60+ session years ago
The Marion County Lake will be the topic of the first 60+ Learning in Retirement Program session of the fall semester, according to program director Connie Isaac.
The session will begin at 10 a.m. in Tabor College's Wohlgemuth Music Education Center on Monday, Sept. 27.
Helen Beckham, Marion, will give a brief history of the Civilian Conservation Corps, how Marion was chosen for the lake site, the arrival of CCC #4755 veterans and other events taking place from the lake's inception in 1934 to its completion in 1940.
"I've enjoyed the lake since 1965," said Beckham, "and these days people can find me much of the time taking walks of discovery around the lake."
Those attending the session will take a virtual walk around the lake courtesy of a slide presentation.
Beckham and her husband, Dwight, recently raised funds to purchase a CCC worker statue to be placed at the Marion County Lake in honor of the CCC men from Kansas. The dedication and unveiling is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m.
Older adults are invited to attend. Enrollment is $15 per person a semester, $28 per couple or $4 a session. In an effort to encourage participation, first-time visitors will be admitted free-of-charge. Registration and discount lunch cards will be available at the door beginning at 9:30 a.m. Coffee will also be served at that time.
