MAYB tourney brings economic boost

Hillsboro businesses got an economic boost this past weekend as hundreds of visitors flooded the city for the Mid-America Youth Basketball tournament Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Both of Hillsboro's motels were full, and one had to turn away players and families who were still looking for a place to say.

Angela Williams, manager at the Hill Crest Motel on D Street, said that all her rooms were booked Friday and Saturday night. The motel had to turn away at least seven individual groups looking for lodging, she said.

Over at Country Haven Inn on U.S. 56, tournament participants filled the few remaining rooms that weren't already taken by visitors in town for a wedding and a reunion.

"Most people knew it was going to be full," said Joy Dalke, desk clerk.

Also hopping over the weekend were Hillsboro's restaurants.

At Pizza Hut on D, business was "better than normal," according to manager Toni Williams. She scheduled extra workers in preparation for the business boost.

McDonald's also saw an increase in customers, especially at breakfast times, said assistant manager Angela Bartel.

Saturday was their busiest day of the weekend, she said.
