McDonalds offers customers healthy choices

Happy Meals for adults will soon be available at McDonald's of Hillsboro.
"Go Active" meals will be available by May 6 at all 13,600 U.S. McDonald's, including Hillsboro's restaurant.
The meal will include a salad, a choice of beverage (which may be water), and a pedometer.
"The menu is being geared more toward flavor," said Dan D'Albini, owner and manager of the Hillsboro store.
Nationwide, McDonald's has taken steps to encourage healthy eating and exercise by offering more healthy varieties and downsizing menu servings.
A fiesta salad will be introduced Friday at Hillsboro McDonald's. The salad will be made with taco meat, low fat sour cream, tortilla strips, and Newman salsa.
"Salads are selling extremely well," D'Albini said.
In June, a healthier alternative to french fries will be offered in the McDonald's children's Happy Meals. Consumers will have a choice of sliced apples with caramel dipping sauce in place of french fries, said D'Albini.
One percent chocolate milk will be added to the menu as well.
D'Albini said eliminating the "super size" french fries two weeks ago has not deterred customers.
"There has been so much publicity with this," D'Albini commented, "that no one has complained."
The Hillsboro restaurant will continue to sell "super sized" beverages until the inventory of cups are depleted or the end of the year.
"All restaurants have to stop selling 'super sized' products by the end of the year," D'Albini said.
"McDonald's has available nutrition guides and other information for eating a balanced meal," D'Albini said.
The Hillsboro restaurant opened July 28, 1994, and has been owned and operated by D'Albini. Currently there are 35 full- and part-time employees.
"The bottom line is, people enjoy eating food that tastes good," D'Albini said.
