Meetings for carbon credits are planned

Kansas producers and landowners soon may get to enter into the marketplace for carbon credits.

A series of local educational meetings are being planned in February to discuss a voluntary pilot program for credits on land that is either under no-till or recently been planted to grass.

The meetings are sponsored by the Kansas Coalition for Carbon Management (KCCM), with representatives from Kansas Resource Conservation and Development Councils (RC&Ds), K-State Research and Extension, several Kansas commodity organizations, Kansas Farm Bureau, and many state and federal agricultural agencies.

Speakers at the meetings will be representatives of K-State Research and Extension and the KCCM.

At the educational meetings, K-State Research and Extension personnel will explain basic concepts of carbon sequestration.

The pilot program will be explained by KCCM members.

Dates and locations of meetings in the county area are: 10 a.m. Feb. 17, Butler County Community Building, 200 N. Griffith, El Dorado; and 1:30 p.m. Feb. 17, Lyon County Extension conference room, 618 Commercial Street, Emporia.
