Meisel named music educator of the year
Bud Meisel is in his 43rd year of teaching instrumental music, with the past 10 years in the Goessel USD 411 schools.
His bands consistently have earned superior ratings throughout his career and earned accolades from adjudicators and his peers. The bands have been selected to perform for Colorado Music Educators Association and Kansas Music Educators Association in-service workshops nine times and the Goessel band was selected this year for the second time.
Meisel earned both his bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees from Western State College in Gunnison, Colo. He is a past president of both the Colorado and Kansas Bandmasters Associations and is the past president for the KMEA South Central district.
He was selected as the SCKMEA district's Outstanding High School Music Teacher this past fall and was informed that KMEA had selected him as Outstanding Music Teacher of the Year and presented him an award at Century II in Wichita.
When asked how he felt about getting this award, Meisel answered, "It means so much more when you are honored by your peers. I asked myself what did I do to get to where I am and I have to say that I surrounded myself with other outstanding teachers and educators throughout my career and learned everything I could from them."
He presently is serving on the Instrumental Recommended Music List committee and the Small School committee for KMEA. Meisel has served as a clinician and adjudicator for marching, large group, solo, and ensemble festivals in Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Nebraska.
He and his wife Sue reside in Newton where she teaches at Slate Elementary School.
