Middle school boys, girls take on Hesston, Marion

All three Hillsboro Middle School boys' basketball teams defeated the Hesston Swathers last Thursday in Hillsboro.

"All three teams showed up to play against Hesston," said Head Coach Shawn Winter.

In the eighth grade game, Hillsboro won 35-24.

Top scorers for the Trojans were Kyle Kroeker who had 11 points followed by Macy Fadenrecht with 10. Other scorers were Chad Hughbanks with eight points, Daniel Bookless, Robert Jost, and Josh Jost with two points each.

"The eighth grade team looked like they had something to prove," said Winter. "They were on a mission and played very hard. This is one thing Coach Hill and I are stressing the second half of the season," he said.

The seventh graders defeated Hesston 37-24.

Leading scorer for the team was Lucas Hamm who had 13 points. Others scoring were Tommy Woods with eight points, Troy Frick with six, Aaron Stepanek and Tyler Kaufman with four each, and Adam Dirks with two.

"Lucas Hamm led the seventh grade with 13 points and nine rebounds," said Winter.

The C-team defeated Hesston 35-27.

Leading scorer for Hillsboro was John Vineski who had 12 points. Others scoring for the Trojans were Jesse Boucher and Peter Fast with four points, Mike Bodiford with three, Shawon Nelson, David Funk, Josh Funk, Brett McIntosh, and Tyler Suderman with two each.

On Jan. 7, the team hosted the Marion Warriors.

"It's always tough coming back after Christmas break after having three weeks off," said Winter.

The eighth graders defeated Marion in a close one 18-17.

"They won another game in the final minutes against Marion," Winter said.

Scoring for Hillsboro were Funk with eight points, Kroeker with five, Hughbanks with three and Fadenrecht with two.

In the seventh grade game, the team lost 34-31.

"The seventh graders made a great comeback in the fourth quarter against Marion, but came up short," Winter said.

Leading scorer was Frick with 11 points followed by Woods with six, Stepanek and Hamm with four, Suderman with three and Dirks with one.

The mixed team defeated Marion 23-21.

"The mixed team won another close game and continues to play well," Winter said.

Scoring for the team were Funk with six points, Vineski with five, Bodiford with three, and Nelson and Funk with two each.

HMS girls

The Hillsboro Middle School girls' basketball team traveled to Hesston last Thursday.

The eighth graders were defeated 36-18.

Scoring for Hillsboro were Laura Skiles and Jenny Terrell who had five points each and Courtney Foth, Megan Peachey, JuliAnne Chisholm, and Lora Andrews had two points each.

The team record is 0-8.

The seventh grade team defeated Hesston 24-14.

Scoring for the Trojans were Sydney Waner and Chisholm who had five points each, Peachey and Andrews had four points each, Mandi Bartel, Lauryn Mayfield, and Chelsey Harmon had two each.

In the mixed game, Hillsboro lost 40-12.

Scoring for Hillsboro were Diedre Funk and Jessica Heidel who had four points each and Alysha Claassen and Bartel with two each.

"The teams played pretty well this past week," said Head Coach Mike Jilka. "They are improving."

The girls' team traveled to Marion last Monday. The eighth grade team was defeated 37-20.

Scoring for the Trojans were Chisholm with seven points, Foth, Skiles, and Lindsay with four points each and Andrews with one.

In the seventh grade game, Hillsboro lost in a close one 16-14.

Scoring for the team were Harmon and Chisholm with four points each, Tina Frick, Waner, and Andrews had two each.

In the C-team game, Hillsboro lost 10-6.

Scoring for the Trojans were Harmon with four points and Claassen with two.

The C-team competed in the Moundridge Tournament Jan. 5.

Against Inman, the team won 16-13.

Leading scorer for the Trojans was Jessica Heidel who had eight points, followed by Megan McCarty with four points, and Elissa Richert and Frick with two each.

In the game against Moundridge, Hillsboro lost 20-6.

McCarty, Frick, and Harmon scored two points each.
