Middle school volleyball team beats Nickerson

The Hillsboro Middle School volleyball eighth, seventh, and mixed teams won their season opener at home against Nickerson.

In the eighth grade match, Hillsboro won 25-8 and 25-12.

Leading the scoring for the team were Amy Neufeld and Suzy Lindsay with seven points each and Bobbi Jo Carlson with five.

"All 12 girls were able to play quite a bit in the match," head coach Stephanie Sinclair said.

"Everyone really showed improvement from a year ago," she said. "This team will be exciting to watch this year."

The seventh graders defeated Nickerson 25-20, 22-25, and 15-17.

Leading scorer for the team was Cassie Kroeker who had 11 points, followed by Aby Humber and Kelsey Bartel with seven points each.

"For their first match of their careers, the seventh graders did very well," Sinclair said. "They really played with a lot of heart, getting to the ball most times."

In the first mixed team match, Hillsboro won 25-17 and 25-16.

Leading scorers for the team were Anna Woelk and Corissa Bartel with eight points each.

In the second mixed team match, Hillsboro won 25-5 and 25-14.

Leading scorers were Steph Abbott with 12 points followed by Greta Wiebe with 11.

"We had very consistent scoring from both mixed teams," Sinclair said.

The teams will compete at 4:30 p.m. today against Sterling at Sterling.
