Mike Fisher is new police officer

Hillsboro has a new police officer.

Officer Mike Fisher, originally from Ingalls, Kan., has joined the staff of the Hillsboro Police Department. He was hired Aug. 9, according to Hillsboro Police Chief Dan Kinning.

Fisher is replacing longtime HPD Officer Jerry Schmidt, who will retire this winter, Kinning said. Right now, Schmidt is not on duty while he uses some unclaimed vacation time.

Schmidt has been a member of the Hillsboro police force for more than 25 years.

Fisher will serve as a patrol officer for the HPD. But he's no stranger to law enforcement — during the past year, Fisher served as a Marion County sheriff's deputy, Kinning said.

Before joining the sheriff's office, Fisher spent two years as a part-time police officer in Hillsboro.

Fisher graduated from Tabor College and the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in Hutchinson, Kinning said.

Fisher is the son of Michael and Sonya Fisher, who manage the Country Haven Inn on U.S. Highway 56.

Officer Fisher will be a big asset to the police department, especially since he's already familiar with Hillsboro and its people, Kinning said.
