Mmm, mmm, good
When Saturday morning rolled around, I was excited.
Not because I'm a such a huge craft fan and was ready to search for the perfect item to decorate my house. Don't get me wrong — I like to look around, but the stuff that really appeals to me is way out of my price range (namely, the wood furniture built by the man from Tennessee).
I was more ready for the food.
Funnel cakes, bierocks, Pronto Pups — I was looking forward to indulging for a day. My mom and I made it to the last two, but not to the first one.
Oh well, you can't have everything.
But it's got me thinking: Even during the other 364 days of the year when the streets aren't crammed with white tents and thousands of people, Hillsboro has got some fairly tasty eats.
And they might be in some places you hadn't considered before.
Here's a list of some of my favorites, with this disclaimer: This is not meant as advertising. It's just my personal opinion, and that's it.
— Vogt's fried chicken — I usually have to partake of a juicy chicken breast at least once a week. Nice and goldeny-crispy on the outside, tender on the inside.
— Cake at the Senior Center — Meals are good at the center, but dessert is even better. As is the company.
— Bierocks at Olde Towne — I don't have any German blood in my veins, but these bierocks make me feel like it. They're just spicy enough inside, with that amazing sweet dough on the outside.
— Cappuccino at Ampride — If I'm feeling a wee bit sluggish, one thing will jolt my system awake: a tall foam cup of vanilla cappuccino mixed with hot chocolate. Yum.
— Anything at the Tabor cafeteria — These college students have it made. They've got a million food choices, a zillion drink choices, and ice cream to top it all off. It must be easy to gain that "Freshman 15" as a TC student. It's a far cry from my college Dining Common, which could get downright scary at times (two words: welsh rabbit).
That's my list — all my personal opinion, for what it's worth. No, I didn't list Hillsboro sausage, so please don't hate me (it's just not my thing).
Now, if anybody knows where I could find a good mocha latte, please give me a call.
