Netters head to league with 24 wins years ago

The Goessel High School varsity Bluebirds won two matches on Tuesday to finish the regular season. Goessel defeated Trinity 15-4, 14-16, 15-4.

The Bluebirds jumped ahead of the Celtics with a strong combination of sets from Tara Goerzen to Melinda Stucky for winners. Goessel passing from Jessica Graber and Becky Schroeder to the front row was consistent.

In game two, Trinity attacked and grabbed a 4-0 lead. When Goessel got the serve, they quickly scored three times, and the score stayed 3-4 for four rotations. The Bluebirds earned the lead of 9-8 but Trinity rattled off six straight points and threatened to end the game.

Goessel battled back with several kills from Lindsey Unruh and good blocking on the Celtics hitters to tie the score 14-14. After a Goessel serve into the net, Trinity was able to score two more times to win 16-14.

In game three, sophomore Ashley Ensz connected on several hits at the net. When she went out of the front row, Stucky came back to dominate net play. With the score 7-2, Goessel went nine servers while scoring only one point.

Shannon Schmidt got the scoring started again from the service line to get the score 11-3. Goessel played tough volleyball with great digs from Unruh and one more kill fro Stucky to seal the victory 15-4.

Against Peabody, Goessel fell behind in game one 5-9 and allowed the Warriors to grab the momentum. With the score 7-9 Graber was able to serve for five points with two aces. Then, with Schmidt serving, Goessel scored the final three points to win 15-10.

In game two, Peabody seemed to self destruct as the Bluebirds methodically tallied point after point and defeated the Warriors 15-0.

Goessel ends the regular season 24-2 and 11-2 in Heart of America League play.

Goessel will host the league tournament Saturday with Inman, Goessel, Little River, and Burrton playing in the high school gym and Moundridge, Remington, Trinity, and Peabody playing in the Junior High Gym.
