New businesses honored by Florence chamber

Florence Chamber of Commerce met Thursday at Carriage Manor with 14 members present.

Framed certificates representing the first two dollars of business were presented to owners of Doyle Creek Mercantile and Tradin' Post.

Doyle Creek Mercantile is a unique gift store housed in the former Knoll building on Main Street in Florence. The business is owned and operated by Judy Mills and her daughter, Sara Neal.

Erik King, acting chief of police for the city, has opened Tradin' Post at the south end of Main Street in the building that formerly housed BYOB Liquor. King will carry firearms, ammunition, tools, jewelry, and videos. Tradin' Post will operate as a pawn shop and King also will offer loans to qualifying individuals.

Trayce Warner announced she had agreed to accept the chairmanship of the Labor Day committee for 2006. The committee had a meeting and established April 29 as the date for Spring Fling.

Warner also announced the committee has fewer operating funds than ever before and fund-raisers will be necessary to pay for the many events of the weekend.

A barbecue cook-off has been scheduled. The Labor Day committee has joined the Kansas City Bar-B-Cue Society, which means the event is sanctioned and will be advertised with others endorsed by the society.

Sara Neal reported she sent 47 notices to potential chamber members encouraging them to join the chamber.

Discussion was held regarding plans to help businesses and change the meetings from luncheon to evening meetings. No action was taken on either topic.

Next meeting will be at noon March 2 at Carriage Manor. Anyone interested in promoting Florence is encouraged to attend.
